90-YEAR-OLD TEACHES AEROBICS

By Isabel Mascarenas

It's showtime poolside at the Manatee County YMCA in Bradenton, FL.

"It's so much fun. Every day is different," says Shirley Dean, 75.

More than a dozen women take part in a water aerobics class led by Pat Gorman."She's our Betty White, she really is," says Susan Garrett, 60.

Just like like Betty White, Pat is also 90 years old.

"She is such a vital, interesting person. The fact that she is is 90 makes no difference at all, she's just fantastic," says Susan.

"You entertain, that's how you teach," says Pat.

Pat gets her students moving through a 45 minute workout by walking laps in the pool, lifting and kicking legs, swinging arms, and blowing a rubber ducky across the pool.

Pat says, "When you are used to moving, you don't want to sit too much. I'm used to moving."

Pat had been dancing since her youth. She joined a synchronized swimming class, took dancing lessons and toured as "Sirena the Underwater Ballerina." She later worked as a school physical education coach and she's been teaching at the YMCA since 1984.

Pat says, "I look forward to every class. I teach no matter what it is or where it is. It's an opportunity to be with good people...  and maybe do them a little good, does me a lot of good."

"I feel good," says Shirley.

"We are ready to tackle my grandchildren," adds Susan.

Pat says forget what your birth certificate says, "No one should think about himself or herself as old. Every day is another day you are alive. Enjoy it, do what you can, have as much fun as you can."
